Klaipeda County is the only coastal county in Lithuania. It consists of the city municipalities of Klaipeda, Neringa and Palanga, and the regional municipalities of Klaipeda, Silute, Kretinga and Skuodas, with its administrative seat in Lithuania's port city, Klaipeda. Klaipeda is the third largest city in Lithuania. The county lies in the western part of Lithuania, with international borders with Russia and Latvia and internal borders with the counties of Telsiai and Taurage. Land in the county also borders onto the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea. The total area of the county is 575,600 ha, of which agricultural land accounts for 323,300 ha, forests for 132,100 ha, water for 55,100 ha and urban areas for 15,800 ha. The population is 416,000.

Transport
All forms of transport are well-developed in the county. Klaipeda is the only port in the Eastern Baltic that does not freeze in winter. With regular shipping links to Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, Russia, Poland, Ecuador, Morocco and South Korea, the port handles up to 20 million tonnes of cargoe per year.

Klaipeda is the key to the whole country's transportation network. A modern highway, built to European standards, links it to Kaunas and Vilnius. The Via Baltica highway is easily reached from Klaipeda, and other routes link it to Neringa, Liepaja (Latvia), and Kaliningrad (Russia).

Industry and Agriculture
The following industries are being developed in the county: shipbuilding, technical repairs and maintenance, construction materials, wood-processing, furniture, cellulose, textiles, food and tobacco. The establishment of the Klaipeda Free Trade Zone will be of tremendous significance for future industrial expansion. The aim of the project is to utilize the opportunities offered by the port city and to promote the economic development of the county. It was formally established in law in September 1996. An area of 205 ha is planned for the zone, and activities to be located there include trade, production, exporting, banking, etc.

Meat and dairy farming are well developed, with many small multi-branched farms and agricultural companies working leased land under joint share capital.

Tourism
Klaipeda County is the most important tourist and recreation region in Lithuania, and includes the seaside districts of Palanga, Karkle, Giruliai, Melnrage, Kursiu and Nerija. There are 33 hotels, 220 guesthouses, motels, tourist centres and camping sites.

Culture and Social Services
Besides the University of Klaipeda, there are many other educational institutions in the county: the Department of Visual Design and medical, technical and other training schools. The county has 27 hospitals, 18 clinics, 144 libraries, 89 cultural centres, 7 museums and 78 sports clubs and schools. The city of Klaipeda has its own Drama and Music Theatres.

There are over 1250 historical monuments in the county, the most significant of which are Klaipeda Old City and the Franciscan church and monastery in Kretinga.
