The roads construction authority was founded on 1st September 1945. After the restoration of independence in Lithuania on 11th March 1990 reorganization of the roads administration was started. On 10th April 1995 the undertaking was reorganized into the state-owned Klaipedos regiono keliai with the Ministry of Transport as founder. The department sees to the following works:
2. State road infrastructure development, and various services for road users. 3. Rebuilding after natural disasters. 4. Development of a road data bank. 5. Transport, construction, repair and other paid services for natural and legal persons according to contract. 
In 1996 there were 310 employees, most of them with a high level of professional training and experience. The economic recovery will allow the department to further improve the state of roads, to purchase the latest equipment for road construction and maintenance, and to apply the newest technology in road maintenance, repair and construction, using high quality materials.
