Klaipedos Smelte was formerly the State Fishing Port of Klaipeda, founded on the 15th of June 1945. For more than four decades the port specialized in fish processing.

In 1994 Klaipeda's Fishing Port was restructed and renamed the Smelte Stevedoring Company in accordance with the decree of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania. Later, on the 5th of May 1995, it was registered as Klaipedos Smelte.

The company is situated on the eastern coast of the Curonian Lagoon, in the south-western part of the town. The favourable geographical location and the ice-free port of Klaipeda make navigation and ship loading and unloading possible 24 hours a day at any season of the year.

The company's quay wall is 2311 m in length, and vessels with a draught of up to 7.5 m can be accommodated there. Ships from different countries are received at 14 berths. The company has excellent commercial relations with Russia, Poland, Norway, Holland, Germany, England, Spain, Cyprus and other countries.

At present Klaipedos Smelte has an annual turnover of USD 11 million, with capital assets amounting to USD 8 million.

Klaipedos Smelte offers a wide range of services, among which cargo handling is one of the main ones. The company handles different types of cargo, such as fish products, fruit and vegetables, grain, liquid and dry mineral fertilizers, metal products and scrap metal, diesel fuel, timber, peat, etc. Klaipedos Smelte runs 16 cranes of different lifting capacity and 54 fork-lift trucks, which are indispensable for this kind of work. Two bulk cargo loaders, one with a capacity of 200 tons per hour and one with a capacity of 300 tons per hour, have considerably improved the efficiency of cargo handling and have helped the growth of cargo volume. The total production throughput has almost doubled: from 700,000 tons to 1,225,000 tons per annum. After the implementation of new cargo handling technologies, and the reconstruction of the company's railway interface, the productivity of Klaipedos Smelte will grow up to 1.5 million tons per annum.

In addition to cargo handling, Klaipedos Smelte offers other services to its customers, such as cargo forwarding, ship agent services, and cargo storage indoors as well as outdoors. Frozen production is stored in a coastal cold-storage warehouse with a capacity of 6000 tons and an area of 6500 m2. The company has 12,000 m2 of warehousing facilities and 34,000 m2 of open storage area altogether.

By means of water clearing devices the company organizes oily water and bilge water cleaning.

It also tenders tugboat services for manoeuvering. These services are offered to all ships entering the Port.

In 1995 Klaipedos Smelte won the Euromarket award for its contribution to the development of international trade and commerce with the EU at the international competition in Brussels.

In February 1996, Klaipedos Smelte was granted the International GRAND PRIX Tradition and Prestige-96 in recognition of its prestige and commercial image.

We invite all businessmen to make use of the services provided by Klaipedos Smelte and the ice-free port.
