The company started operations in 1989 as a construction company, renting premises in Salantai (close to Kretinga). Later, the company built warehouses and a wood-processing workshop, and in 1994 we built our base on a plot of land in Kretinga.
Construction of the company's buildings was completed in 1995, and the company then started selling construction materials and wood products. In 1995, together with the Dutch firm "Eclipse", we started manufacturing window-blinds. Our activities on land are now mainly centred on wood-cutting, window-blind production (roll and pliuse blinds) and truck and car repairs. At the beginning of 1994, the company took a loan and stood surety for a fisheries firm that was about to start a business in Mozambique. The firm went bankrupt and Kretingos Baltica took it over. Three trawlers were bought; two were sold and the loan was repaid to the bank, after which two trawlers were bought again. At present, Kretingos Baltica owns three trawlers and has been deeply involved in fishing. The main catches are of Tiger, King, Queen, pink and red shrimps, and also various types of langoustine, crabs and some demersal fish. In the summer, it is planned to use one trawler solely for catching the finest quality fish, while the other two will be used for demersal fish. The company's trawlers comply with the Euro-1 requirements. Kretingos Baltica will be able to export part of its production to Western Europe. Up to now, we have been selling products to South Africa. The company has professional crews and four representatives in Mozambique who manage its affairs directly and have also made a few expeditions to Kenya. The company plan to fish in the shallow waters near Mozambique and to catch langoustine and pink shrimps (Puerulus carinactus) off Kenya. We intend to buy one more ship in order to provide at least minimal services to the company's workers in Mozambique, and a tanker with a capacity of 1000 tons to transport fuel, the idea being to have a base-ship with all the necessary facilities available so as to make the company independent of African service companies. |
