The Lithuanian-Netherlands joint telecommunications venture Lintel was established in 1992, when Lithuania was taking its first steps as an independent country. Lintel's international gateway circuits connect Lithuania and western countries. This was a solid step forward in Lithuanian telecommunications, since all international calls were connected via Moscow prior to that time. With the expansion of Lintel's activities, a contract was signed with Alcatel Telecom Norway in 1994 to equip a new international inter-urban switch and to connect it to the existing Lintel telecommunications scheme. This switch started operation in May 1995.

Although most international calls are automatically switched, Lintel has an operator service 8-195, which helps subscribers make international calls and inter-urban calls and provides foreign operators with information on Lithuanian telephone subscribers, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Communications with foreign operators were established in 1994, and Lithuanian subscribers can receive information about foreign subscribers.

In 1995 the decision was made to expand the activities of the company to commence publication of telephone directories. Taking into consideration a fast-growing market in local media advertising, it was decided to issue inexpensive, informative and quality telephone directories for consumers. After studying foreign telephone directory operations and with the knowledge that residents' directories had not been published in some cities of Lithuania for a long time, Lintel, seeking to meet residents' demands, made the decision to include residential telephone numbers in its directories. This is the first telephone directory of its kind in Lithuania. Because of their new structure and informativeness, these directories are popular among Lithuanian residents. Advertising in Lintel directories should be useful for foreign companies which are looking for business opportunities in Lithuania.

Lintel is a stockholder in Mobilios Telekomunikacijos (Bite GSM) and UAB Mokejimo Korteliu Centras. Bite GSM provides an enhanced service package of mobile communications within the GSM system. UAB Mokejimo Korteliu Centras' sphere of activity includes a bank-card service. These are large Lintel investments in Lithuania.
