For the Lithuanian Shipping Company there have been two important dates -- 1969, when the company was established, and 1991, when the Republic of Lithuania re-gained its independence.

The latter date has a very special meaning as it was only in 1991 that Lisco became the real owner and operator of its fleet of ships.

In this context, it should be pointed out that, having overcome the first difficulties of independent operation, the Lithuanian Shipping Company managed to find its own place in the international shipping market. After having maintained traditional contacts and services and having established priority interests, Lisco is now welcoming new partners and is open to mutually beneficial co-operation. Fleet renewal is one such priority. During the last five years, Lisco has acquired the Mindaugas and Algirdas container carriers as well as the Voke and Musa sea/river type vessels.

During 1995-96 Lisco enlarged its fleet, adding the modern Vytautas and Gediminas general cargo vessels built at "Baltija" shipyard. Lisco has also started a project for the construction of new vessels. Their hulls are built in Klaipeda with further completion in Spain and companies from Spain. The first vessel, the m/v Asta, has already been towed to Spain and will be launched this year.

Since, operating on its own Lisco has managed to adapt to a totally new challenge -- transportation of Ro-Ro cargoes and passengers. This new departure for Lisco was implemented in the Klaipeda-Kiel (Germany) line and is now operating successfully with the reconstructed and refurbished Vilnius and Kaunas ferries, which were supplemented by the Ro-Ro Palanga in April 1996.

The railway ferry Klaipeda is operating on the Klaipeda-Mukran-Klaipeda line, carrying wagons and Ro-Ro cargoes. Meanwhile, the Ro-Ro type Siauliai has been sailing regularly between Klaipeda and Ahus (Sweden).

During its years of self-operation the Lithuanian Shipping Company has taken the decision to concentrate on the Baltic region, including ferry services without neglecting tramp voyages.

Lisco is always ready to co-operate and consider new business proposals, offering on its part reliability and effective operation.
