The Lithuanian Savings Bank (Lietuvos Taupomasis Bankas) is not only the oldest but also one of the most popular banks in Lithuania. The first savings banks were already established in Lithuania by the middle of the 19th century, and as early as 1899 there were 196 savings banks operating in the Vilnius, Kaunas, and Suvalkai provinces. The Lithuanian Savings Bank is now a joint-stock company with 74% of shares owned by the State. The remaining 26% of shares belong to the Bank's employees and small- and medium-scale enterprises. Virtually every adult citizen of Lithuania holds an account with the Lithuanian Savings Bank. The approximately 2.7 million personal deposit accounts held with the Bank comprise over 50% of the households' deposit base in Lithuania. The Lithuanian Savings Bank operates with a wide network of correspondent banks, co-operates actively with banks from different countries world-wide, and is a member of various international financial institutions and organizations, including Europay International S.A. -- the largest provider of payment services in Europe, the World Savings Banks' Institute, and SWIFT. The Bank was the first bank in Lithuania that issued Eurocard/MasterCard cards and is the only bank that offers its clients rapid international money transfer services, which operate via the Western Union Financial Transfer Service system. Occupying a leading position in the Lithuanian retail banking sector and operating the largest network of branches in the country, the Lithuanian Savings Bank can thus offer a wide range of banking services in national and foreign currencies both for individuals and companies. The Lithuanian Savings Bank is capable of efficiently processing and transferring funds from Lithuania to anywhere in the world. With the most extensive network of local banking institutions in Lithuania, the Lithuanian Savings Bank can issue Letters of Credit to beneficiaries anywhere in Lithuania. Experts in our Head Office can provide clients with professional consultancy on import and export document transactions, handle and clear documentary collections sent to the Lithuanian Savings Bank by the drawer for payment or acceptance. Dealers of LTB actively operate in local and foreign markets. They offer trading in all major currencies, including those of the CIS countries. The Specialized Financial Broker Division of the Lithuanian Savings Bank holds one of the leading position in the National Securities Exchange in terms of the total turnover of securities.
