Because of economic difficulties after the restoration of independence and the fact that financing from the state budget was no longer available, production decreased. With the country's economy still in deep crisis, there is less money allocated to reclamation and improvement. Therefore the decreasing volume of work determines the work profile; a greater part of financing goes to maintenance of the land reclamation equipment. The company, with the experience and means of transport, faces the problem of how to use these efficiently. At present the company is searching for new ways of surviving and profitable business opportunities. The company wishes to increase participation in improving agricultural production, while keeping its main aim of searching for new opportunities to utilize its technological know-how efficiently. Meresta hopes to revive its participation in the construction of the Via Baltica and is intensively pursuing this goal.
