Palanga Airport is an affiliate of Lithuanian Airlines, the country's largest aviation company, and is an important centre of air traffic connections, an international and modern regional airport located by a seaside resort. Its location is very convenient: not far away from the Baltic Sea, 7 km from the resort town of Palanga, 28 km from the seaport of Klaipeda and just beside the international Kaliningrad-Liepaja highway. Palanga Airport fulfils modern standards and requirements. Between the two world wars, because of its strategic importance, it was the country's second airport (after Kaunas). New aircraft were tested there and pilots were trained there. The Palanga-Kaunas flight was considered to be the first regular flight in the history of Lithuanian avaiation. Under Soviet rule, the airport was used mainly for military purposes. In 1961, it started functioning as an internal civil airport of the USSR. Since the restoration of Lithuanian independence in 1991, the airport has been an independent organization measuring up to international standards. A lot of reconstruction and modifications have been carried out: the runway and passenger cargo terminals have been reconstructed, one of the best air navigation systems in Europe (Tompson) has been established recently, the variety of services has been increased, etc. The two-kilometre runway has up to now been used by aircraft of medium size: JAK-42, IL-76, Boeing 737-200 and small private aircraft. The main airlines using the runway have been Lietuva and Lithuanian Airlines. There are regular flights from Palanga to Hamburg, Kristianstad, Oslo, Bilund, Frankfurt, St Petersburg, Moscow (summertime) and charter flights to Hamburg, Hanover, Berlin and Munster. Pilot training and parachuting lessons are also held at the airport. Various services are available at the airport, and credit cards are accepted in the cafˇ and duty-free shop.
