The Palanga Rehabilitation Hospital is situated in the northern part of Palanga, in a magnificent natural setting on the Baltic coast. The sea, sun, the forests around the hospital, the iodine-laden air and fresh scents of the pine-woods, combined with the treatment administered in the hospital (physiotherapy, psychotherapy, diet therapy, halotherapy, kinezitherapy) raise the body's resistance to illness, increase energy and restore lost strength. Patients are restored to health following various diseases, surgical operations, traumas and psychosomatic illnesses. The aim of rehabilitation is to restore the patient's health and enable him to return to normal life. Care of the patient, comprehensive assessment and qualified treatment are the main areas of the hospital's work. The hospital has 200 beds in 5 specialized departments: neurology, post-operative rehabilitation, rehabilitation of the disabled and two pulmonoary departments. There are also departments of physical medicine and rehabilitation, occupational therapy, subsidiary diagnostics, treatment rooms and other departments. There is a department for people who come from abroad seeking rest and treatment. Foreign guests may choose facilities according to their needs: a two- or three-room apartment or smaller units consisting of single or double rooms. Priority is given to the disabled. Those suffering from spinal fractures or damage to the medulla need special facilities. They are given both medical and occupational rehabilitation at the hospital. Medical records and patients' histories are kept for comparison at their next consultation at the hospital, and can also be provided for use at other centres. The hospital employs a staff of highly skilled specialists who are able to apply the latest medical treatments. It has contacts with Michigan rehabilitation clinics, the Paraplegic Centre in Nottwil (Switzerland), the Vyborg Rehabilitation Centre in Denmark, and other medical institutions. Owing to its experience and the high qualifications of its staff, the hospital has become a training centre. Doctors in residence who are specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation come to learn here, and nursing specialists gain practical skills and further qualifications. More than 4000 patients from Lithuania and about 500 foreign patients are treated at the hospital every year.
