There are strong dairy traditions in northern Lithuania. The Pasvalio suriai plant was built 20 years ago and has produced fermented cheeses since than. Now it is one of the biggest in this field in the country. The plant's capacity is 2300 tons per year of the fat fermented cheese Svalia, which is a tasteful component for sandwiches and goes very well with beer and is as well widely used for the preparation of different foods. Annual production is 700 tonnes of skim fermented cheese, which is used in the production of melted cheeses.|
Butter is demanded by consumers, as is sour cream with different fat content. The sour cream has been used for a long time.
The production meets all the highest quality requirements. The fat fermented cheese Svalia was awarded a medal at the "Agro-Balt 95", Agricultural Fair. The plant buys approximately 44,000 tons of milk per year and processes it with new Western European machinery, adding the best quality ingredients.
Pasvalio suriai dairy products are popular not only in Lithuania; 70% of Svalia, 90% of the skim fermented cheese, 60% of the butter and 15% of the sour cream production were exported to Eastern European countries in 1996.
