The district of Plunge is situated only 60 kilometres from the Baltic Sea. This district is famous for its numerous lakes and hills. Plunge had its origins in the small village of Gondinga that was founded in the 13th century near one of these hills, though the name Plunge did not appear in the written documents until the 16th century. The town became independent in 1792. The population of Plunge has grown, and today 57,000 inhabitants live in the district, about a half of them in the town itself. The town is famous for its beautiful old buildings. However, the most remarkable place is the city park which was established in the 18th century. The park surrounds the palace that was built in the 19th century by the very progressive noble family of Oginskiai. Today this building belongs to the Zemaitija art Museum. There are may small villages in the district, each with its own distinct history. A very interesting place to visit is Rietavas, the second largest town in the district. The nobleman Oginskis built a castle there in the beginning of the 19th century. Rietavas has the first electric power station built in Lithuania. In addition, the first Lithuanian telephone service also appeared in the same town. Another interesting place is the village of Zemaiciu Kalvarija. It is famous for its religious monuments and festivals, which are sacred for pilgrims from all over Lithuania. There are 37 different lakes in the district of Plunge. The majority of them are situated in the Zemaitija National Park. One of the most attractive and important lakes in Lithuania is Lake Plateliai. This is an area of camping places, hotels and motels that create an atmosphere of luxury and comfort for domestic and foreign tourists. Zemaitija National Park is also famous for the commercial hunts that are organized in the extensive forests nearby. Most people in Plunge are engaged in farming. Nevertheless, industry is also developed. Today there are 1690 enterprises, the majority very successful. The achievement of Lithuan-ian independence was a great help for the economic development of the district: many private firms were set up. More than 50% of all land resources are owned by private farmers. Despite the fact that the people of Plunge work hard, they do not devote all their time to their jobs. There is a variety of leisure activities in this district, such as the folk-lore group Suvartukas. Their dances and songs are popular not only in Lithuania but also in foreign countries. Many exciting events such as brass-band festivals and fairs take place each year in the district. Many people of Plunge are interested in sport, particularly in basketball. Everyone supports the district basketball team Zemaitijos Olimpas which is the third best in Lithuania. The district of Plunge has many distinct features. Besides its astonishing landscapes, visitors will find people always ready to help, cozy cafés, exciting leisure opportunities and scenes and events to remember for life.
