The Rietavas Forestry Station was founded in 1923. At the time its area was 16,768 hectares. Now our territory covers 60,000 hectares (in Plunge, Silale and Klaipeda regions), with 31.4% forested. We now have 10.2% in undergrowth, 50.6% in seminature, 22.2% becoming nature and 17% in nature and over-nature forests. Rietavas Forestry Station renews, takes care of and utilizes forest resources. Each year we cut more than 90,000 m3 of wood. The main production is for logs, pulpwood, fuel wood and commercial wood. In our saw-mill we saw building timber for local and foreign markets and blanks for euro-pallets. Successive planting of trees and shrubs, building new roads and renewing old ones, and regulation of forests mean that our forests can be used for many purposes. Utilization of the forests has increased by increasing labour productivity and expanding forest territories. Our aim is to maintain continuous and rapid growth of valuable wood and other production. Each year we plant valuable kinds of trees in more than 200 hectares of cutting area, bring up about 800 hectares of undergrowth, drain about 5277 ha of forests, and dig 5400 km of canals (the soil is used for building roads in the forests). Tourists and guests visit hydrological and nature reserves, which are valuable cultural monuments. The forests are full of berries, mushrooms and herbs which the local inhabitants enjoy picking. Forests suitable for hunting are hired out for hunters. There are deer, elk, roe, wild boars, foxes and wolves in the forests.
