Rokiskis Forestry is located in the northern part of Lithuania and borders the Republic of Latvia. During Soviet occupation, all private lands in Lithuania were nationalized and became state-owned. Now, however, forest lands are privatized again and have been returned to their previous owners. Being a state institution, Rokiskis Forestry administers and controls the private forest lands of the area, 46,000 ha. There is a predominance of pine, fir, birch, and mixed forests. The forestry works according to complex forestry management, the aim of which is the protection and restoration of forests, land-reclamation, building of roads and highways and the preparation, partial processing and sale of wood and the organizing of commercial hunting. Considerable amounts of round wood are sold: logs, pulpwood, raw-veneer-material of birch and alder trees, material for packing, stakes, fire wood, and cut wood. Part of the timber, mostly firewood, is sold to the local inhabitants in the form of standing timber. A total of 85-90,000 m3 of solid wood are produced and sold each year. Wood is sold in Lithuania and also exported to Germany, Sweden, Holland and Russia. Seedlings for the restoration of the forests are grown in the forestry arboretum, which has 77 different kinds of ornamental trees and bushes available for sale. The seedlings are used as greenery for cities, settlements, and private farmsteads; 2.3 million seedlings and saplings are produced each year. They are usually grown either in open ground or using a closed-root system, i.e., in rolls and pots. Some seedlings have recently been grown in containers. As regards wildlife in the area, the forests are home to moose, deer, roe deer, wild boars, hares, wolves, foxes and other small animals and birds. Hunting is not only popular among local hunters: it also interests hunters from Germany, Austria, Denmark, France and Sweden. The forests provide recreational facilities for a large part of the population. The area of Rokiskis is well known for its lakes and beautiful countryside. Both the wildlife and beautiful landscape attract tourists, photographers, fishermen, etc. People visiting the place are always positively impressed by it. Hunters and small groups of tourists (up to ten people in a group) are provided accommodation and food in the Rokiskis Forestry hunter's lodge.
