The district of Rokiskis is one of the most interesting and beautiful parts of Lithuania. The district is in the very north-east of the country, bordering Latvia. The total area is 1806 km2 with a population over 47,000. The district is like a miniature version of Lithuania, with the same landscape: hills and lakes are everywhere in Aukstaitija, the historical and ethnographical north-west of the country, then plains as in the central part of the country, and lowlands reminiscent of Zemaitija, the historical and ethnographical one of west of the country. Even the name of the longest river, Nemunelis resembles the name of the largest river of Lithuania, Nemunas. There are 99 lakes (3042 ha), 51 ponds (793 ha) and 42 rivers where you may rest and enjoy nature. The tourists favourite is the longest lake of Lithuania - Sartai, a real paradise for fishermen. Forests cover an area of 42,216 ha and a lot of hunters from other districts as well as from abroad come here hoping for a good hunt. The legend of the founding of Rokiskis tells about a hunter called Rokas who had been hunting for hares (in Lithuanian "Kiskis"). The town was founded in 1499. The princes Krosinskas settled here in 1523. Later on Rokiskis Manor was the property of the Counts Tyzenhauz and Psezdecky. All these dynasties were linked, but the Tyzenhauses left more of an imprint on the town's history as they had built the centre of the town as the most expressive urban monument of the classical epoch in Lithuania. They initiated construction of the Church of St Matthias, the most beautiful example of the Neogothic style in the country. There is also a beautiful palace which has been used as the Regional Museum since 1933. The development of the town was accelerated in the second half of the 19th century by the opening of a railway line. From 1916 to1950 Rokiskis was the centre of the district and since 1950 it has been the centre of the district.

Everyone is impressed by the exhibits at the Museum and by the handwork of our goldsmiths. International amateur theatre festivals and folk festivals take place here. Rokiskis is of interest to foreign businessmen because we have a lot of hard-working and conscientious people. About 124 joint-stock companies and more than 680 individual and state firms work here. We are developing infrastructure for small and middle-size businesses and welcome tourists from the West.
