In 1913, Mr A. Gricevicius established the Ruta Confectionery Plant. He learned the confectioner's art in Vilnius, Siauliai and St. Petersburg. The first premises of Ruta were in a small wooden house. Mr Antanas Griceviius and his wife Juzefa were the first workers. Ruta grew little by little. In 1923 several brick buildings were built. The plant expanded and improved during the period between the world wars. Ruta was well known for its quality production, and recipes were created by the owner. The confectioners skills were highly appreciated at local and international competitions. A "Grand prix" was won in Italy in 1929. Around 300 kinds of sweets were manufactured in the plant, and 160 people worked there. In 1940, when the USSR occupied Lithuania, the plant was nationalised and Mr A. Gricevicius was "relieved". Up to the end of 1993 the plant was a state enterprise with its new shops, which had been built in 1984 in the industrial section of Siauliai town. The old Ruta buildings in the center of the town were remodelled. After the restoration of independence in Lithuania, the old buildings covering 5000 m2 and 0.9 ha of land were returned to the heirs of Mr A. Gricevicius, his son Antanas and granddaughters Mrs Aldona Gluodiene and Mrs Irena Valuntiene. Around 210 employees now work at the plant in 5 industrial departments: mass preparation, chocolates, dragees, chocolates with fillings, and liqueur sweets. Liqueur sweets with chocolate coating are the most popular ones, many of which were invented by the plant employees. Chocolate-coated whipped jelly sweets as well as various chocolate figures are manufactured here too. Both children and adults like the quality products manufactured at Ruta, which has retained its founder's old traditions. |
