General Information. The district is in the southeast part of the country, with the town of Salcininkai (44 km from Vilnius, pop. 7000) as its administrative centre. Other towns of importance are Eisiskes and the residential area known as Baltoji Voke. The district has a population of 40,500, of which 10% are Lithuanian, 80% Polish, 5% Russian and 5% Belarussian. The district is 149,200 ha in area, 44% of which is covered in forest. Scenery. Most of the district lies on the Eisiskes Plateau. The Merkys River and a few minor tributaries flow across the northern part of the area. There are 8 lakes and 5 reservoirs in the district. The best views are to be found in the Dieveniskes ("God's Land") Regional Park and the Sarkuciai Landscape Reserve. The Salcia and Visincia Hydrography Reserves, the Navakonys Geology Reserve, the Azubale Pedology Reserve, the Siline Botanical Reserve and the Papis Ornithology Reserve are all protected natural areas. Places to visit. There are over 130 places of interest, including the 18th-century Tabariskes Church, the granary of the former estate at Tabariskes, the 19th-century Salcininkai Manor, the 19th-century Eisiskes Church, the buildings and park of the former Manor in Jasiunai and the old part of Paskonys village, which dates back to the 19th century. Industry. Wood and agricultural product processing companies predominate. The company "Nalsia" in Salcininkai is involved in construction, trimming and wood decoration and owns a shop. "Stikloplastika" has been active for 25 years in spare-part production. It employs 80 workers and its quality production is exported to Sweden, Germany and Poland. "Jasiunu" keramika manufactures ceramic products: decorative tiles, floor tiles and decorative parts for window sills. Its products have been used for the interior decorations of the Lithuanian Academic Theatre, the Gediminas and Trakai castles, etc. Places to stay. Visitors are given a warm welcome in the K«sminta and Eisiskes Hotels, and the Selena Motel. The K«sminta Hotel has a bar, restaurant and sauna, 20 double rooms and a garage.
