The Stumbras tannery in Siauliai was established by the brothers Nurokai in 1898. At first, we mainly produced hard (sole) leather; soft leather production was started in 1926. From 1945 to 1993, the enterprise produced yuft for military footwear, felt, and natural and fashionable shoe-linings. Since 1993, the range of production has undergone major changes. The enterprise started making chromium-plated leather semi-finished products, all sorts of leather for shoes, and leather for belts, garments and fancy goods. In January 1994, it was privatized and became the joint-stock company Siauliu Stumbras. In April 1997, the capital reached LTL 42,168,976, of which LTL 33,109,211 is nominal share capital; 15% of the capital is owned by the state. The company currently employs 440 people. Siauliu Stumbras is located in the northern part of the city of Siauliai, near the Riga-Kaliningrad railway and close to two ice-free ports: Klaipeda (170 km away) and Riga (140 km away). The company has an affiliate in Kretinga. The main products are chromium-plated leather semi-finished products, crust and all sorts of shoe leather. In 1996 the company processed 5308 tons of raw material and made 416,000 m2 of leather. The same year, the yield from products and services sold was LTL 26,600,000. Currently, up to 600 tons of raw material are processed each month to make chromium-plated semi-finished products, and 60,000-80,000 m2 of leather are produced. Mostly pig and cattle hides are being used and only chemichals are of western productions. The leather is sold in the markets of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Belarus, Finland, Poland, Slovakia, Germany, Italy, France, Spain and England. In the future, the company intends to establish contacts to sell our products in South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Africa. In terms of industrial capacity, we are one of the largest tanneries in the Baltic states. Work began in 1986 with the building of a new leather-processing plant next to the old one, but this has not been finished due to financial difficulties. In the second quarter of 1997, construction of a new industrial water supply and sewage disposal system was finished. USD 6 million are needed to finish the construction of the new plant. It is intended to finish the construction work in 1998, and when the new plant starts operations the company will be able to process up to 1500 tons of raw material each month. Siauliu stumbras are planning to specialise in the production of footwear leather.
