Silikatas was established in 1993, after reorganization of a state owned enterprise. The company's starting capital is about USD 2 million. The state owns a 19.9% share in the company. At present, the company has about 300 employees. In 1995, the company was split into two parts and the rock wool slabs production workshop was reorganized into the Lithuanian-Swedish company Paroc Silikatas. The other part of company produces silica bricks. In 1994, the company started to produce decorated silica bricks with a coarse surface and in 1995 coloured bricks with plain and coarse surfaces. It is planned to produce about 25 million of these in 1997. Silikatas already uses this kind of material for residential buildings in Vilnius and its production is used more for construction now. The City lent the company the property on which the residential buildings will be built, using materials from the company and its subsidiaries. Silikatas will produce the wooden parts for the buildings, the Lithuanian-Swedish company Paroc Silikatas will provide stone wall slabs and Silikato karjeras will meet orders for sand, gravel and so on. Silikatas wants to expand its activities and has designed a program for investments. The company is looking for partners and resources to implement this programme. It needs to buy a steam boiler due to increasing heating prices. The company is negotiating about the organization of cement and related mixtures for construction production and replacing its production machinery to build a new enterprise. The company needs to buy smaller brick-splitting machines and trucks with self-loading equipment. This would improve service to customers and result in greater customer satisfaction.
