Location. The district is situated in the northeast of the country, bordering on Belarus. Svencionys is the administrative centre. The other main towns in the district are Svencioneliai and Pabrade. The district consists of 13 municipalities. The overall area of the district is 169,200 hectares, with a population of 35,900.

Forestry. The district has rich forest lands. It is the second most forested district with 58% of the area covered by woods. Pine groves predominate (87.6% of all the forest lands). There is a variety of wild animals in the forests, such as moose, deer, roe, wild boars, wolves, foxes, hares, mink, etc.

The district has 286 lakes and the Zeimena River with its tributaries. Kretuonas Lake is a famous nesting area for rare Lithuanian birds. The lakes abound in pike, tench, perch, bream, burbot, etc. The rivers and lakes also afford places for salmon, vimbas and other fish to spawn.

Tourism. Tourism is a service with good future prospects. Much of the land, especially bordering the lakes, is attractive for recreation and hunting. The Zeimena River is popular among canoeing enthusiasts.

Places to visit. The historical monuments which the district has inherited include the former Cirkliskis manor buildings and park, the former Kaltanenai manor granary, Naujas Strunaitis water-mill and Church (1847), Kaltanenai church altar (18th century) Labanoras church (1818) and art monuments, Pavovere church and Belfry, the former Pabrade Inn, and the 19th century Kaltanenai District, now considered an urban monument.

Industry. There are no large enterprises. The most important companies are: Svencioniu VaistaZoles (medicinal herbs), Liejiniai (foundry), Svencioneliu Keramika (ceramics), Pabrades Kartono Fabrikas (cardboard factory).

Transport. The Vilnius-Daugavpils railway crosses the District. By road, Svencionys is within easy reach of Vilnius, Ignalina and Lentupis in Belarus.
