Brewing in the Klaipeda area began to grow in importance during the time of the Order of the Knights and developed rapidly. Especially in the 17th-18th centuries, a large number of laws and decrees concerning brewing were issued. The Board of Breweries was established in Klaipeda in 1603. A law came into force in 1647 and was supplemented in 1671. Brewing stimulated the activity of auxiliary trades such as coopering and malt drying. Malt drying rooms survived in the town for a long time because they provided considerable income. They were moved beyond the Kuliai Gate (now in the area of Kuliai Gate streets) at the end of the 17th century because of the danger of fire. In 1778 the Guild of Brewers became the owners of malt drying rooms and the Klaipedas Brewery was established by J. W. Reinecke in 1784. Later this brewery and the Theodor Preuss Brewery successfully merged. At the end of 18th century large joint-stock breweries competed with the small ones. By the latter half of the 19th century there were only three large breweries, and only two at the beginning of the 20th century. One of these is still functioning today. It is the joint-stock company Svyturys. Today Svyturys is a modern brewery which produces approximately 250,000 hectolitres of beer and 20,000 hectolitres of fruit drinks a year. The brewery is proud of its best beer Baltijos. Several types of Baltijos beer are produced now: Stiprusis (strong), Gintarinis (amber), Originalusis (original), Sviesusis (light). These beers satisfy all customer tastes. The newest beer, with an excellent flavour and crystal limpidity is Baltijos ekstra, which is very popular in the pubs in the Klaipeda area. You can taste this and dark Baltijos beer cooled and on draught in 50 and 30 litre kegs. Svyturys Brewery's production is sold widely throughout Klaipeda, Nida, Palanga and other areas. We, the producers, don't say that our beer is the best. Our motto is: "Taste and compare." |
