Taurage Municipality covers 1179 km2. The population numbers 56,000, of whom 35,000 live in the town of Taurage. The main river in the southwest of Lithuania, the Nemunas, is joined by its tributary the Jura on its right bank. Taurage is on the Jura. The town is the centre of the district and region. The archaelogical monuments of the district include unique finds and historical documents illustrate Taurage's honourable past and rich history. Taurage has a convenient geographical situation on the roads that join the former Russian capital St Petersburg with Talin, Riga, Koningsberg and other Western European cities, and the railway has provided excellent conditions for the town to grow by developing industry, trade and other occupations. Over sixty years, the traditional industries of producing bricks and drainage pipes have become well-established, and wood and furniture production, milk, meat, corn, fruit and berry processing enterprises and plants have grown. Local raw material have supplied these industries. To produce high quality brick and drainage pipes we have important deposits of clay, rich forests for wood working and a good agricultural base for food production. The district of Taurage can be proud of its wonderful naturally beuty: breathtaking rivers and valleys, the park of Pagramantis, picturesque sites of ancient castles and Lake Draudenyay. Our forests abound in wild animals, birds, mushrooms and berries and can restore anybody to life, even the tiredest and most jaded. Taurage has an active cultural life. Both in Lithuania and abroad, the Jura Song and Dance Ensemble is well known. There is a chamber chorus, led by Z. Komskis, as well as a folk theatre. Traditional song and dance festivals, country music evenings and other entertainment attract a large number of people every summer. After the restoration of independence, Taurage has been changing step by step and strives for fulfilment of her hopes of overcoming the current hardships that are inevitable after such major changes. |
