The district, which covers 165,900 ha and has a population of 80,600, is famous for its historical and cultural heritage. There are more than 200 cultural landmarks in the entire district. The following are some of the most significant attractions: the Island Castle of Old Trakai, which served as the second capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and was the home of the Grand Duke Vytautas Magnus; the church of Old Trakai, which Vytautas built in 1409, and a former monastery are still standing. The castle grounds are on an island and a peninsula in Lake Galve. On dry land rising from the swamps there are the ruins of a palace and farm buildings, and also a church that was built in the 16th century and restored in 1719. Also of particular interest are the churches of Rykantai (16th century) and Dusmenys (1820), with their artistic decorations, and the church of Onuskis (1829). Parts of old Onuskis and Semeliskes are regarded as monuments of urban architecture. Parks have been landscaped in Lentvaris and Aukstadavaris. The Trakai Historical Museum is housed in the Island Castle. Roads and transport. The Vilnius-Kaunas Highway runs along the northern edge of the district. Excellent roads branch out from Trakai, and there are rail links to Vilnius, Kaunas, Trakai and Grodno. Scenery. The district is graced with over 300 lakes, in addition to the huge dammed Elektrenai Reservoir. The most valued developed beauty spots are the Trakai Historical National Park, the Aukstadvaris and Neris Districtal Parks and the Gejus and Inkleriskes Landscape Reserves. The Pipiriskes and Tauciunai Geomorphology Reserves, the Ilgutis Botanical Reserve and the Papis Ornithological Reserve are all valuable nature sanctuaries. Tourism and Sports. Tourism is a growth sector in the district. The natural, cultural and geographic environment is especially attractive to visitors. Lithuania's best rowing teams practise in Trakai, and sailing enthusiasts make use of the local lakes. An athletes' rehabilitation centre has been opened at the Trakai Sports Centre. |
