The Trakai Forest Administration was established in 1938. The forest land of the Trakai Administrative Region covers nearly 59,000 ha, and the forest is supervised by 12 ranger stations. Services are supplied by a wood preparation station, a wood processing workshop and the Aukstadvaris Regional Park Service. Pine is the most common species, accounting for nearly 70% of the forest area; next come fir, covering 19% and birch (7%); other species account for the remaining 4%. The age distribution of the trees is as follows: saplings 39%; half-a-century-old trees 40%; almost fully-grown trees 12% and fully-grown trees 9%. The volume of wood of the fully-grown trees amounts to 943,000 m3, and the annual growth is 144,500 m3. Each year, 90,000-120,000 m3 of timber are cut down and sold both within Lithuania and abroad. Cleared spaces are planted artificially, using pine and fir saplings. The Administration has begun using Scandinavian equipment for wood processing. Visitors and tourists love to come and see the scenic views of the region with its hills and lakes. Mushrooms and berries grow in plenty in the coniferous forests. Commercial hunting for foreign hunters is organized by the administration.
