This county lies in the north-eastern part of Lithuania, and consists of the municipalities of Utena, Anyksciai, Zarasai, the Ignalina and Moletai Districts and the city of Visaginas. It has an area of 720,100 ha and a population of 203,000. The county centre is in Utena, and the other most important towns are Visaginas, Ignalina, Moletai, Anyksciai and Zarasai. Utena is the oldest city, dating back to 1261; the "youngest", in both the county and in Lithuania as a whole, is Visaginas, which was founded only in 1975. The county borders on Latvia and Belarus. Industry. The country's only nuclear power plant is in Visaginas. Key industries in the area include machinery production, metal processing, construction metals, textiles, knitwear and foods. The largest industrial plants are in Utena, Anyksciai and Visaginas. The most developed enterprises include: the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant, the Utena joint-stock companies Mesa (producing meat), Utenos trikotaZas (a knitwear manufacturer), Utenos pienas (dairy products), Utenos statyba (construction), Utenos agroautomatika, the Anyksciai companies Anyksciu vynas (wines), Anyksciu varis (copper), etc. The joint-stock company Utenos gerimai (beverages), in Utena, is one of the country's leading breweries. The companies mentioned above export to Germany, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway, England, Holland and other countries. Agriculture. The main branches of agriculture are dairy and meat cattle breeding. Conditions are not very favourable for an expansion of agriculture, as the soil that is arable is not very fertile. For this reason, attention is being focussed on non-traditional branches of agriculture, such as agrotourism. The land is being privatised, and more farms are being established. At the moment there are over 22,000 farmers in the county, and they use over 35% of the arable land. Education and Culture. The county has 43 nursery schools, 174 secondary schools, 3 colleges, 3 agricultural and a polytechnic college. There is also a network of institutions for extra-curricular activities: music and art schools and sports clubs for rowing, acrobatics, etc. Each district in the county has its own cultural centre. Celebrations are organized for all the major festivals, such as Shrovetide, St. John's Day and Easter. Other popular traditional events include the Lake Festival, the Bilduciai Regional Children's Theatre Festival in Ignalina, an international Country Festival in Visaginas, the Linksmoji armonika ("Jolly Accordion") festival in Utena, horse races on Lake Sartai, etc. Scenery. Tourism. Places to visit. The county includes the northeastern part of the Aukstaitija area, with uplands and hills and scenic views of forests and picturesque lakes. Forest covers 221,300 ha, and lakes cover 53,500 ha. These include Lake Tauragnas, the deepest in the country, Lake Druksiu, which is the largest, and Lake Asveja, which is the longest. The region also boasts the StelmuZe Oak, the oldest oak tree in Europe, and the Puntukas Stone, the largest stone in Lithuania, is to be seen in Anyksciai Landscape Reserve. The landscape is especially favourable for recreation and tourism. The most treasured panoramas are in the Aukstaitija National Park and the Anyksciai, Asveja, GraZute and Labanoras Regional Parks. There are over 1000 cultural and historical monuments in the county, the most important of which are the 18th-19th century manor farmsteads of Raguvele and Burbiskes, and the churches of VyZuonos (19th century), StelmuZe and Videniskes (17th century) and Paluse (18th-19th century). The most interesting museums in the county are: the Lithuania Ethno Cosmic Centre at Kuloniai Village, and the memorials to the classic Lithuanian authors A. Baranauskas and A. Vienuolis-Zukauskas and J. Biliunas in Anyksciai. A Bell Museum is to be seen in Sirutenai, and visitors can enjoy the scenic ethnographic villages of Kukuteliai and Mecionys and the museum Rojus ("Paradise"), established by the naturalist A. Hrebnickis, in Dukstas. |
