The Varena combined fodder enterprise, now called Varenos grudai (Varena Crops), began its work in 1971. Not long ago the company celebrated its 25th anniversary. From the very outset, the company processed barley, wheat and maize in small amounts. In time, the company started producing much more complex recipes for cattle and swine fodder. The company has also been producing albumen-vitamin premixes for swine, cows, calves, and suckling pigs, as well as fodder for poultry. At first, granulated fodder was made for ducks and ducklings. At the same time, the company started producing granulated fodder for carp. In the beginning the company used molasses and fodder fat for granulating. Now rape-oil is used. Some time ago the company started producing food for chickens, broilers and turkeys. At that time, the demand for this kind of fodder was high. The company's plant worked three shifts and produced 800 tons of fodder per 24 hours. The districts of Salcininkal, Varena, Vilnius and Alytus were supplied with the company's production at that time. In 1992, the demand for fodder decreased markedly due to the break-up of agricultural companies. For this reason the plant stated working a one-shift system. The main production was food for poultry. The company have been producing mixed fodders for pedigree hens, chickens and broilers. The company's largest customers are Vilnius and Juodsiliai poultry farms. One shift produces about 200 tons of fodder for chickens and broilers per 24 hours.
