At the beginning of the 19th century, Vilnius had many small and private liquor distilleries. However, as time progressed, their number decreased gradually until in 1922 a new plant was formed by the amalgamation of the remaining private businesses. This plant was destined to become the basis of a future state liquor enterprise, set up in 1940. In 1995, after privatizing 20% of the state-owned capital, the enterprise was converted into the joint-stock company Vilniaus Degtine. The company's share capital totals USD 3,600,000, 80% belonging to the state and the rest to the company workers. The company has a subsidiary in Audroniu k., Rokiskio rajonas (190 km from Vilnius). This is the Obeliai distillery producing green ethyl alcohol. The company employs 330 people, 251 workers, 32 graduate experts and 35 specialists. In 1997 the Obeliai distillery will be closed for reconstruction. At present, the distillery uses a distilling machine of periodic functioning. Its output is 10,000 litres per day. After reconstruction, the distillery will have a new machine which will double the output to 20,000 litres per day. There will also be a new automatic water purification machine and a new steam-boiler. The green ethyl alcohol produced in the Obeliai distillery is rectified at the company's rectification shop in Vilnius. The rectified ethyl alcohol falls into three categories:
The company has a 1,100,000-litre disposable spirit storage reservoir, a factory canteen and mechanical and joiners' workshops. A new industrial works has been constructed recently. It covers an area of 5800 m2 and is appraised at USD 1,700,000. In addition, there are also some vacant industrial premises where in two years time, another two filling lines will be installed. The first line will handle 12,000 bottles of 0.2-0.5 litre capacity per hour, the second line 18,000 bottles of 0.5-1.0 litre capacity per hour. After the reconstruction and installation of new technology and up-to-date machinery, the company's production capacity is expected to rise to 24,000,000 litres of alcoholic drinks per year. Vilniaus Degtine satisfies its main raw material needs (crops, juice, sugar) and auxiliary materials (corks), buying them in Lithuania, Western Europe and in the CIS. Vodka is produced form the rectified ethyl alcohol, soft water and other ingredients, according to the production recipe. Liqueur and brandy are produced from the rectified ethyl alcohol, soft water, natural fruit and berry juices, cognac, wine and various aromatic and medicinal herbs. In the production of some vodka, liqueur and brandy products we use natural or equivalent artificial flavourings. This is being done in an attempt to enrich the flavour of these products. The company's production is distributed in Lithuania and about 18% is exported to the CIS. In Lithuania, two thirds of the production is distributed through a network of distributors. This network is constantly expanding. There is the possibility of exporting not only to the CIS but also to Western Europe. |
