| Liepaja
has historically developed as a city of trade, industry and culture. Its advantageous
location on the Eastern coast of the Baltic sea, with an ice free port and transport
infrastructure, secure its status as a very convenient and efficient trade route between
Eastern and Western Europe.
|
One of Liepaja's key
advantages is its port, when commercial operations began in 1992. Before then it was the
Soviet Navy's largest West coast naval base. The Port of Liepaja does not suffer the
constraints
which are often associated with long-established ports and can therefore implement very efficient, flexible development policies specifically designed to attract and encourage investments. Looking forward to the 21st century, Liepaja is constantly working on further developments. With substantial land available for development, Liepaja became a special economic zone in 1997. This effectively gives the port a free-port status. The surrounding hinterland, including major industrial areas, railway terminals, the airport and warehousing facilities are all embraced in this zone. The key benefits of the special economic zone status include tax free holidays, a free customs zone and preferential landowner terms. |
