Latvian Mobile Telephone Company Ltd.

Latvian Mobile Telephone Company Ltd. (LMT) is a GSM and NMT 450i cellular network operator in Latvia. Sonera (Finland, formerly known as Telecom Finland); Telia AB (Sweden); Latvian State Radio and Television Centre (Latvia); Lattelekom (Latvia) and VEF (Latvia) founded the company on January 2, 1992. LMT was awarded NMT and GSM licenses on September 11, 1992.

The NMT 450 switch was put into operation on October 7, 1992. This became the LMT Independence Day as calls previously routed to Helsinki NMT switch could now be processed locally.

Latvian Mobile Telephone Company Ltd. is a full member of NMT MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) since the MoU foundation in 1994. By autumn of 1998 the LMT NMT network covered more than 57% of the territory of Latvia and 83% of the population. There are about 15 000 subscribers to the NMT 450i network.

The commercial launch of the GSM network took place on January 19, 1995. LMT entered GSM MoU as a full member on December 10, 1992. By autumn of 1998 the GSM network covered more than 25 % of the territory of Latvia with more than 100.300 subscribers. LMT provides the following value added services:

Voice Mail, Fax/Data Transmission, Call Forwarding, Call Barring, Call Waiting/Call Hold, Multiparty/Multiparty with Call Hold, CLIP, SMS.

By autumn of 1998 LMT had international GSM roaming with more than 88 operators in 50 countries and NMT roaming with 11 operators in 10 countries - this allows calls to travel seamlessly from country to country while using the same phone.

Since LMT does not distribute mobile phones, the company has signed mutual agreements with more then 120 mobile phone dealers throughout Latvian, establishing a powerful sales network.

LMT has established 4 customer service branch offices in Riga and one in Ventspils, an important port city. By autumn of 1998 the company employs more than 250 people. LMT does not stand still, but constantly looks for new horizons. We hope that our teamwork and determination will help us build in a developing situation until maximum performance is achieved.
