Commercial Port is proud of its ancient tradition as a transit port between the East and
the West. The centennial anniversary of Ventspils Commercial Port as a transit centre was
held in May 1997. Nature itself is an important and lasting ally of Ventspils Commercial Port. The Port is ice-free during even the most severe winters. By mid-1999 the final phase of the dredging works in Ventspils Freeport harbour will be completed, enabling Ventspils to accommodate dry cargo carriers with carrying capacity of 75,000tons. Completion of this project shall make Ventspils Freeport an unrivalled leader in the Baltics, able to handle larger vessels at lower costs. In a word, a deeper Ventspils Freeport will enable customers of Ventspils Commercial Port to save money by despatching bigger cargo volumes in one shipment. Ventspils Commercial Port & You – TOGETHER IS BETTER A/s “Ventspils Commercial Port” “Ventspils Commercial Port” plays a leading role in the handling of general cargoes and bulk cargoes in Ventspils Freeport. The present composition of cargoes handled by Ventspils Commercial Port includes: ferrous metals (billets, coils, slabs up to 32 tons weight), non-ferrous metals, ferroalloys, coal, pig-iron, cotton, reefer cargoes, &c. There are technical facilities available for reloading of grain and other packaged and loose food-stuffs,and packaged chemicals. A specialised cotton warehouse provides safe and efficient storage of 16`000 tons of cotton at one time. A unique, dedicated warehouse for loose FeSi with 8`000 MT storage capacity secures qualitative storage and handling of ferroalloys. The open storage area of the company equals 190`000 m2, with 85`000 m2 of shed area. In July 1998the company commissioned a new warehouse of 4`400 m2 area and 40`000 tons storage capacity for CR steel and other general cargoes. |
![]() Ventspils Commercial Port is the largest transit port in the Baltics. Deep-water berths accommodate vessels of up to 75`000 DWT, with the technical means available to handle vessels at 15`000 tons rate in 24 hours loading. In the meantime a/s “Ventspils Commercial Port” has embarked upon a broad investment programme, targeted at the acquisition of more capable handling equipment, new buildings and infrastructure development. Within the said investment programme a/s “Ventspils Commercial Port” shall invest about US$ 50 million up to the year 2002. A/s “Ventspils Commercial Port” has been implementing several projects targeted at increasing the efficiency of terminal operations and attracting added value activities in the port area.
The construction of a ferroalloy crushing and screening facility was completed at end of 1998. The plant incorporates a packaging unit and provides the whole scope of services regarding the processing of ferroalloys in order to meet constantly changing market requirements. Construction of temperature-controlled warehouse with total storage space of 5`000 m2 shall be continued throughout 1999. The warehouse shall primarily be used to store fish and meat products. A quay with 12.5 m depth alongside will be able to to accommodate large reefer vessels. Reconstruction of two quay-walls with a total length of 368 m and 15.5 m depth alongside will be completed this year. The new quay-walls are able to accommodate vessels of up to 75`000 tons DWT. Adjacent storage space will hold a load of 60 tons / m2.
