Tourism, General information. Vacation and holiday information for Norway

Every year a great number of tourists "discover" Norway, and during the last decade tourism has literally exploded.

Norway Holidays - Norway Vacation
The fjords are traditionally Norway's greatest tourist attraction. The most spectacular scenery is found in the inner arms of the fjords. The contrasts between fjords and mountain glaciers, flowering orchards and waterfalls, have been the source of many themes used by painters and poets, not to mention the composer Edvard Grieg.

Norway is a land of mountains, but they are modest by global standards. The highest mountain is Galdh piggen, 2,469 meters. However, mountains emerging right out of the sea as sheer cliffs or sharp pinnacles have a monumental effect.

This makes the coast of Norway unique. The Nordland waterway has been described as "the most beautiful in the world" by enthusiastic tourists. The myriads of islands stretch out into the sea. At some places sea-bird colonies cover entire cliffs with thousands and thousands of nests.

The history of Norway
Around a thousand years ago, Norway was a great power in Northern Europe for a while, thanks to ship building and maritime skill. During this period, Viking ships and stave churches were built, as well as a number of stone churches.

The finest preserved medieval monuments include the excavated Viking ships in the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo, Nidarosdomen Cathedral in Trondheim, the cathedral in Stavanger, Mariakirken in Bergen and more than 30 well-preserved stave churches.

Akershus Festning and Bergenhus, fortresses in Oslo and Bergen harbors, are architectural treasures from after the reformation. The oldest evidence of human inhabitants are found on rock carvings which are found in abundance, some covered with hundreds of figures. They are to be found all over the country, maybe most impressively in Alta in the northernmost province of Finnmark.

Other sites of interest are Røros, a mining town from the 1700s, Lofoten for its spectacular scenery and fishing, the Folk Museum in Oslo and Maihaugen in Lillehammer.

From this century, there are the sculpture park created by Gustav Vigeland in Frogner Park and the Edvard Munch Museum, both in Oslo, the ski-jump and the Ski Museum at Holmenkollen, or the site of the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer. The Bergen Railway, with the Flåm line winding its way dramatically down to the fjord, is very popular with tourists.
