Greatness and decline
A period of Civil Wars, with rival claimants to the throne, came to an end in the 13th century, and medieval Norway reached its peak under Håkon Håkonsson. Norwegian dominions expanded to include parts of the British isles, Iceland and Greenland. But the economic and military resources of the country were not sufficient in the long run to maintain control of these far-flung areas. The German Hanseatic towns took over the export and import trade. Norway lost out during the Nordic power struggle in the 14th century, and when 2/3 of the population died in the Black Death the arena was prepared for foreign domination.
