The EC
The question of European Community(EC) membership has been a popular subject of political debate in Norway for years, and still is. Prior to the EC referendum in 1972, the majority of members of the Storting were in favour of EC membership - as were most larger Norwegian newspapers. Contrary to forecasts, the majority of the people voted against membership, and the ruling Labour Party, which had been a fierce advocate of membership, was forced to step down.
