International co-operation
Norway has participated actively in a large number of organizations through the UN system. It has taken part in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), since its inception in 1949. The following year Norway joined the Council of Europe. Norway also played an active part in the establishment of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).

There has been more extensive co-operation between the Nordic countries since 1945, and Norway was one of the co-founders of the Nordic Council in 1952 (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden). Throughout the years, the Nordic countries have become more closely integrated. A number of laws have been standardized, and there is close co-operation between the five countries.
