Following the start of activities at the Oseberg field in the autumn of 1991, total oil production increased significantly to more than two billion barrels daily, making Norway the sixth largest oil producer in the world. Norway is the only country in the western world which exports more petroleum than it consumes. The Norwegian sector of the North Sea is still a major area with continued potential growth within the field of oil and gas development. In 1991 alone, 13 oil and gas finds yielded a find rate of 40% - the highest in the world.
