The Midnight Sun of Norway
Northern Norway is known to tourists as the "Land of the Midnight Sun". North of the Arctic Circle, the sun shines day and night for part of the summer. In Bod¯, just north of the Circle, the midnight sun is visible from 7 June to 8 July, and there is no daylight from 15-29 December. At the North Cape, the midnight sun is visible, if it is not overcast, from 14 May to 29 July, and the period of darkness lasts from 18 November to 24 January.

The darkness is by no means total, except for the middle of the night. Most of the time the sun is so near the horizon that the "Nordic twilight" lights up the landscape. In the night, when the moon is not out, the Northern Lights (Aurora borealis) shine and wave like swords and airy curtains in red, green and violet.
