The Nordic Countries

Literature, theatre and music
Iceland can proudly boast of one of the world's highest levels of literacy. The famous Sagas have been passed on from generation to generation for centuries and are today considered national treasures. An Icelandic author, Halldór Laxness, was awarded the Nobel prize for literature, which is considered the most prestigious award of its kind in the world.

The Danish author Hans Christian Andersen wrote world-famous timeless fairy tales during the last century, which still produce delight among the young and the not so young.

The Norwegian Henrik Ibsen and the Swedish August Strindberg are both internationally known to those who frequent the theatre.

The Nordic House in Iceland, designed by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto.

The Finnish composer Sibelius drew his inspiration from the Nordic light and the landscape, making his music so distinctly Nordic, yet powerful enough to be appreciated regardless of geographical and cultural borders.
