The Nordic Countries

The Volcanological Institute
The Nordic Volcanological Institute in Reykjavík, Iceland, has no parallel anywhere else in the world. Iceland has more than 40 active volcanos and although it is the only one of the Nordic countries where there is a risk of volcanic eruptions, the threat is not considered solely Icelandic, as the consequences can reach far beyond the country itself.

The Volcanological Institute enjoys worldwide respect as an authoritative scientific institution and has given advice to numerous parties and governments. Volcanologists' research subjects are substantial and cover areas such as how ash particles are scattered in the stratosphere, applying the gathered information to other areas in the world for the purpose of information data and preventive measures. The Third World, which has no proper research facilities of its own, benefits from the advice and assistance of the Insitute at times of crisis and in taking preventive measures.

The Institute is funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers. It works as an international research institute and has hosted numerous geological scientists from all over the world.
