The Nordic Countries

The Gene Bank
Another institute funded by the Nordic Council is the Nordic Gene Bank for Agricultural and Horticultural Plants. The Gene Bank is located in Lund, Sweden and has attracted international attention for its work.

The purpose of the institution is to preserve seeds from old cultivated plants, which despite their hardiness, are considered not sufficiently sophisticated for use in modern farming. These plants are preserved to meet future needs of forming the basis of new specialised plants and to serve as samples in their most original forms.

The Gene Bank has set an international precedent and has been followed by the construction of large gene banks all over the world.

Hekla, the most famous volcano in Iceland

The bank is stored in a coal mine on Svalbard, an island in Norwegian territory approx. 1,300 km from the North Pole. This shelter, which is capable of surviving a nuclear attack, keeps the seeds in permanent darkness at sub-zero temperatures without electricity or artificial refrigeration.
