The Milan Vidmar Electric Power Research Institute (EIMV) is a leading Slovenian engineering and research institute in the field of electrical power systems and power economy. It studies the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity from an economic and technological aspect. The institute prepares feasibility studies, designs documentation and expert reports; performs ecological and other analyses; controls quality and the operation of power systems and facilities. It provides services for Slovenian power plants, distribution and transmission utilities, various ministries and regional and local authorities. The institute covers the following fields:

  • planning, control and operation of electrical power systems

  • techno-economic issues of power economy

  • planning and monitoring of power plant operation

  • quality assurance and quality control of power system facilities (including the Krsko Nuclear Power Plant)

  • impact of power system facilities on the environment

  • high-voltage techniques

  • chemistry in power systems

  • expert reviews of the fulfilling of regulative (legislative) technical and safety requirements in the process of design, construction and operation of power system facilities

The institute was founded in 1948 on the initiative of professor Milan Vidmar, a great expert in the field of power systems and one of the best chess-players in the world in his time. In the fifty years of its existence, the knowledge accumulated at the Milan Vidmar Electroinstitut has made an important mark on:

  • post-war electrification and creation of the Slovenian power system

  • construction of 110, 220 and 400 kV networks

  • integration of 220 kV network into SUDEL

  • integration of 400 kV network into the European interconnection

  • participation in the planning and construction of all Slovenian power sources and networks

  • construction and operation of the Krsko Nuclear Power Plant

  • improvement of power quality

  • transfer of knowledge and new technologies into Slovenian power system utilities

The institute has seven research and two administrative departments with around 90 employees (most of whom have B.Sc, M.Sc and Ph.D. degrees). The work is also carried out in laboratories and on-site. There have been more than 1400 studies and many expert reports, measurement reports and expert opinions issued by the institute. The institute regularly organises various lectures, round tables, seminars and conferences with foreign and domestic participants and this contributes to the development of the field and also to the Slovenian economy.

Several EIMV employees are members and presidents of committees, subcommittees and working groups for the preparation of national standards. The institute is also an active member of IEC. It has sound contacts with several domestic and foreign institutions and actively participates in various international research projects.
