Johnson Controls-NTU is part of the Johnson Controls concern, which was founded in 1885 in Milwaukee, USA, and is now based in this city. The concern consists of two business groups:

  • The Automotive System Group (the ASG), which supplies complete seat systems, seat components as well as seat covers for cars, all-terrain vehicles and vans, and the Battery Group which manufactures car batteries and is the leading supplier of original equipment and spare parts on the North American market. The ASG has two development centres - one in Plymouth, USA, and one in Burscheid, Germany.

  • The Controls Group. In international terms, it is one of the leading providers of services for facilities management and of control systems for offices, industrial facilities, trade and administrative buildings, schools and hospitals.

In Europe, the ASG employs 14,000 people in 54 factories and annually manufactures around 3.7 million sets of seats. The ASG production range consists of:

  • complete seat systems
  • metal frames for seats and backrests
  • seat-adjustment mechanisms
  • cushions (using various foam technologies/natural and polyester fibres)
  • seat covers
  • head and armrests (conventional and insitu)
  • systems to build in safety belts
  • sun roofs
  • back shelves
  • linings for backrests
  • parts made of artificial materials

The development of Johnson Controls-Ntu d.o.o. goes back to 1956 when Workshop II - production of rubberised horsehair and foam materials - was formed at the Tovarna usnja Slovenj Gradec leather factory. Backed by its long-standing business partner, Germany’s NAUE KG, with which a contract of joint investment was signed in 1972, the Ntu expanded to the field of polyurethane processing, and in 1992 it further expanded its range by adding the manufacturing of car headrests. The same year America’s Johnson Controls bought the majority stake in the Slovenj Gradec-based company.
