Krka is one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in Central and Eastern Europe and markets its products in more than seventy countries worldwide. Most of its annual sales of 340 million USD are made abroad as three quarters of its production is exported, thus ranking Krka among the Slovenia’s largest exporters. Krka’s expanding network of companies and agencies around the world provides a major support for the high percentage of exports and more than 300 people are currently employed in thirty-five companies abroad.

Pharmaceutical and chemical operations, which in addition to the production and sale of prescription medicines and pharmaceutically active ingredients also include the production and sale of veterinary products, over-the-counter products, and cosmetics, comprise over 90% of the firm’s business.

Drugs for human use

From the very beginning, Krka has invested heavily in the construction of modern facilities for the production of medicines and of chemical and biosynthetic substances. All its efforts are oriented toward the development of its own modern medicines that make up an increasing share of Krka’s sales. The remaining Krka products result from successful cooperation with the leading multinational pharmaceutical companies. Krka’s wide range of effective, high quality, safe, and competitively priced prescription medicines, which make up 65% of Krka’s entire sales, includes medicines for almost every theraputic field. The most important are those used in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, infections, and diseases connected with digestion and metabolism, the central nervous system, and respiration.

Over-the-Counter Medicines

Krka’s over-the-counter medicines are intended for self-medication and are available without prescription. Made from herbs or gentle synthetic substances, they are safe and simple to use. They are used to mitigate and treat health problems that we can detect, recognize, and deal with quickly by ourselves. Krka’s range of these medicines is extensive, encompassing a spectrum of phytotheraputic remedies prepared on the basis of various extracts of gingko, hawthorn, nettle, garlic, valerian, chamomile, and many other herbs. The program is complemented by vitamin and mineral products in patient-friendly forms, products for alleviating cold symptoms, non-prescription medicines, and nutrition and diagnostic products.

For Healthy Animals

Krka also produces veterinary products in various forms intended for the intensive production of poultry, pigs, and cattle, as well as the health protection and successful breeding of other animals. A special program of feed additives is intended for the latter, which the breeder can employ for efficient breeding. Recently, special intention has been devoted to products for house pets.

The development and production of veterinary products are oriented primarily to manufacturing our own products through biosynthesis and chemical synthesis. Krka also manufactures a smaller part of its production and sales program in cooperation with world-renowned pharmaceutical houses.

Beauty and Health

Health and beauty are inseparable. Krka wishes to satisfy the desire for beauty and personal care as much as possible. We offer customers a wide spectrum of perfumes, a line of skin care and beauty products, oral hygiene products, and household and leisure products. In addition to producing our own lines, we cooperate with well known companies such as Yardley and WD-40 Company Limited from Great Britain, the Morris Profumi Division of Henkel S.p.A. from Italy, and Asef and General Cosmetics BV from The Netherlands.

Health Resort Tourism

Krka supplements its role in health care through health resort tourism, thus directly contributing to maintainance and improvement of the quality of life, and operates four major Slovene health resorts: Smarjeske toplice, Dolenjske toplice, Otocec, and Strunjan.

Quality, the Precondition for Success

Krka is aware that quality is a precondition for business success and a key to competitiveness and productivity. Production is regulated in accordance with international standards, and Krka therefore manufactures high quality, safe, and environment-friendly medicines. At Krka, the development process and documentation is managed in accordance with the most demanding norms of the European Union and, if necessary, of the United States’ Food and Drug Administration. The ISO 9001 certification that Krka acquired for the development, production, and marketing of pharmaceutical materials and feed additives represents an important advance in the field of quality.

Research and Development

Predominantly a producer of generic medicines, Krka devotes much attention to research and development. The basis of effective development is careful and high quality research. Krka is currently pursuing important research projects in pharmaceutical technology and related fields. In cooperation with prominent domestic and foreign academic institutions, Krka is undertaking projects in the field of new pharmaceutically active ingredients and biotechnology. The development of new products is oriented toward marketing our own products with high added value, the synthesis and formulation know-how, and methods for quality assurance.

To a great extent, Krka’s successful growth and rapid development are owed to its professionally trained and highly motivated staff who closely follow the latest professional requirements and achievements. Krka’s most valuable investments are its investments in skills and knowledge. Thus, its employees, who numbered 3673 in late 1997 (505 in Krka’s health resorts), are prepared for the diverse challenges that the new millennium will bring.

Precisely defined short- and long-term comapny goals, suitable strategies to achieve these goals, and continual monitoring of planned and achieved results are important factors in Krka’s success. Krka’s future is oriented toward the steady growth of sales, intensive investment in the modernization and expansion of operations, new research and development achievements, overall quality and excellence in conducting business, the long-term security of shareholders’ investments, a responsible attitude toward the environment, and creative conditions for employees. Krka is especially aware of its responsibility to the environment and is aware that greater responsibility and concern for a clean environment and unspoiled nature will bring a friendlier and better tomorrow.
