Pleasurable experiences make our lives richer and more beautiful, and a visit to the Municipality of Krsko in southeastern Slovenia can doubtlessly rank among them. Our municipality is located where the Sava River valley widens into the spacious Krsko polje plain which is bordered on the south by the lazy current of the Krka River.

From the large industries of former times, numerous private enterprises have developed in the fields of construction, metalworking, paper, textiles, wood-processing, agriculture, trade, and transport. A positive business climate has developed in the municipality enabling the development of various new enterprises and the realization of countless business opportunities.

The geographical position and landscape of the municipality favours the development of agriculture and tourism. Hard-working hands have transformed the sunny hillside slopes of the Krsko Basin into fertile vineyards and apple, pear, peach, apricot, and plum orchards. Our local Cvicek wine is famous-a light, refreshing red wine suitable for every dish and occasion. The selection of other grape varieties is wide, and high quality wines such as Laski Rizling, Modra Frankinja, the white and red Sremican, and predicate wines that have won awards at national and international wine fairs are matured in numerous wine cellars.

Tourism is another field with excellent development prospects. Our natural, cultural, and historical wealth is a good basis for investment in tourism. At the foot of the Gorjanci mountain range, we can enjoy the natural treasures of Kostanjevica Cave. The Krakovo forest is the only virgin forest in Slovenia where English oak (Quercus robur) grows and is a habitat for several rare and endangered animal species. The diversity of the landscape, its natural assets, and ancient culture have inspired numerous folk customs. The festivals of Pust (around Shrove Tuesday), St. George’s Day, the grape harvest and the Cvicek wine festivals, Martinmas, corn husking, the cherry and chestnut festivals, Midsummer’s Night, and the St. Nicholas Eve holiday are celebrations that not only serve as entertainment but also link us with the heritage of the past. On summer evenings, various open-air cultural events are organized such as Summer at Rajhenburg Castle along with musical events in the larger towns. The best-known local musicians are the Videm Wind Orchestra with their many successful national and international appearances and the Krsko Music School and Big Band with their now traditional Big Band Festival.

There are many possibilities for recreation and relaxation, and many sporting events take place regularly. Fishing in the ponds near Brestanica is a unique experience. The calm blue-green Krka River offers not only fishing but also boating and swimming. The menus in local restaurants and on tourist farms are extremely varied and include attractive local dishes such as duck with homemade mlinci (flat cakes), Martin’s goose, and delicious homemade sausages and bread. From the diet of our ancestors, one can choose most interesting and tasty items such as buckwheat struklji, buckwheat potica with cracklings, and buckwheat, corn, or white zganci.

In this vivid and picturesque landscape, the present is intertwined with the heritage of long past centuries. Archeological findings in the Ajdovska Cave give evidence of prehistoric settlement reaching as far back as the Stone Age. The early Iron Age left its silent witnesses at Libna, and the remains of the Roman town and river port of Neviodunum can still be seen at Drnovo. In the Middle Ages, many castles and many still well-preserved churches were built. The first medieval castle in Slovenia, mentioned in a document dating from 895, is undeniably the Rajhenburg Castle in Brestanica. The Bozidar Jakac Gallery in the restored rooms of the former Cistercian monastery (founded in 1234) in Kostanjevica boasts more than 3500 works of art focusing mainly on Slovene Expressionism and a collection of Old Masters.

In the monastery gardens, more than one hundred works by sculptors from around the world remain as witnesses of an international sculpture symposium. In the Capuchin monastery and the Church of Mary built in 1640 in Krsko, the 300-year-old Capuchin library and the monastery’s gallery collection of Old Masters can be visited.

Many important figures in Slovene history are linked with the town of Krsko. Adam Bohoric, born near Brestanica, was a Slovene grammarian and the first schoolmaster. His pupil Jurij Dalmatin, born in Krsko, translated the entire Bible into Slovene in 1584. The historian and polymath Janez Vajkard Valvasor, whose Glory of the Duchy of Carniola (1689) made Slovenia known throughout the world, lived for a time in Krsko.
