Mlekarna Celeia, d.o.o. (Celeia Dairy), a limited liability company, was the first dairy company in Slovenia to carry through the process of privatization. It is owned by twenty-two agricultural cooperatives, the Agricultural Cooperative Investment Fund, the Agricultural Management Investment Fund, and to a lesser extent by its employees.

Celeia Dairy prides itself on more than fifty years of operation. Owing to ever-increasing demand, we have been able to undertake several renovations of our production facilities and increase the number of employees as well. In January 1979, the Smarje Cheese Dairy joined Celeia Dairy. In 1984, production began at a new plant in Arja vas with a daily capacity of 180,000 liters. To economize production, the Smarje operation was transferred to Arja vas in 1996, and our cheese production machinery was modernized and automated. With these improvements we became the largest and technically best equipped producer of semisoft cheeses in Slovenia. In 1998, we are taking the final steps of our investment in modernization and increasing the capacity of our filling machines for fermented products.

High quality raw milk is purchased within our own purchase area from 2000 suppliers on highland and other well-managed farms in the Celje area. Celeia Dairy processes more than fifty million liters of milk yearly; two thirds of this is processed into semisoft cheeses and the rest into pasteurized milk and fermented products that represent the most diverse assortment of their kind in Slovenia.

Responding to keen domestic and foreign competition and in addition to our investments in modernization, we do our best to continually enhance the quality of our products and to fulfill the wishes and needs of the most demanding customers. Developing the company and keeping abreast of the competition is in the hands of the firm’s general manager Zdravko Pocivalsek, an agricultural engineer, his team of experts, and our 130 employees.

Our annual turnover of 60 million DEM (8% of the total is gained from export) is a confirmation of our market success and the high quality of Celeia Dairy’s products. Some of our outstanding trademarks:

• cheeses: Smarska Gavda, Smarski Trapist, Smarski Rok, Edamec Zelene doline (Green Valley Dutch cheese);

• fermented products: Zelena dolina (Green valley) probiotic yogurts; ACI with and without fruit; Zelena dolina yogurts and sour milk without additives; Hitgurt fruit yogurts; Fru and Soncek dessert yogurts for gourmets; coffee, vanilla, and fruit yogurts; vanilla yogurt with whole fruit and Mileram sour creams;

• pasteurized milk, cream; and drinks: Sivit whey drink, Zipp yogurt drink.

Many of our products bear the “SQ” (Slovenian Quality) symbol of quality and the “Protective Nourishment” label that is granted to products according to the strict standards of the Slovene Society for the Protection of the Heart and Vascular System. We are also proud of the ISO 9001 Certificate of Quality awarded to us on July 7, 1997.
