On the basis of raw milk purchased, Mariborska mlekarna (Maribor Dairy) is the second largest dairy in Slovenia, having bought more than fifty million liters in 1997. Every day, 140,000 - 160,000 liters of milk are bought, collected, and processed by our computerized reception and pasteurization system. Of the annual total, the dairy processes ten million liters into consumer milk and uses the remainder to produce 2300 tons of various cheeses, 1100 tons of cottage cheese, and 16 million items containing sour-milk drinks and cream.

Maribor Dairy’s share of purchased milk amounts to approximately 13%, the same as its share of Slovene dairy product sales, but, of course, its production program differs from that of other dairies in Slovenia. Along with income from our own production, a large portion of income comes from the additionally purchased dairy lines of other well-known domestic and foreign producers, and a significant part is played by our sales program of frozen items such as ice cream, frozen vegetables, pasta and potato products, fish, and other frozen foods.

Established in 1941 as a small private dairy, Maribor Dairy has since built a dependable and efficient network of more than 2300 milk suppliers, mostly from northeastern Slovenia and Carinthia, with 260 modern collection sites. Great attention is paid to quality so that our products are among the very best in the entire Slovene dairy industry. Along with its widespread network of suppliers, Maribor Dairy also has a steadily growing sales network numbering more than 2500 customers in Slovenia.

Maribor Dairy products are well respected throughout Slovenia and every year receive major professional awards and medals for quality. In 1992, for example, our cheeses were champions among cheese products in Slovenia, and in 1994 three of our cheeses received international awards at the Hopfgarten Cheese Competition in Austria.

The most famous of our products is the Maribor cottage cheese known and appreciated by all Slovene housewives. Other much admired Maribor Dairy cheeses include the Mini dessert cheese (which has received the majority of awards so far); the Maxi special cheese; Edam and Gouda cheeses; Lent, a white cottage cheese with spices; and cheeses made on the basis of original Italian know-how, a novelty on the Slovene market: the “pasta filata” cheeses Bella Napoli-Mozzarella, Bella Pizza-Mozzarella, and Bella Capri-Provolone.

Also excellent are our sour milk drinks-especially Zala, O.K., Toti Fru-and fruit yogurt in five flavours. Our sweet and sour creams are no less delicious. Recently, Maribor Dairy has turned its attention to low-fat products and is producing low-fat milk, yogurt, and cheeses for its customers; our skimmed milk cottage cheese has already been on the market for several years.

Maribor Dairy is an open enterprise bent on modernization, always planning new products and having in view a breakthrough into foreign markets. It obtained the status of export dairy in 1997 and at the same time introduced a quality control system for the bacteriological purity of its products (HACCAP) to guarantee their high quality. Technological, professional, and marketing modernization is an imperative for Maribor Dairy in order to expand its market beyond the borders of Slovenia. Continuing efforts to reduce production costs and substantial investments in modern equipment will pave the way for Maribor Dairy to meet European competition.
