As a centre of transport and trade, Helsingborg has superb advantages. It stands at an international crossroads, not only for road and rail ferry traffic going between Sweden and Denmark, but also for merchant ships between the Baltic Sea, Scandinavia and the rest of the world. Located in one of the most dynamic regions for industry and commerce in Sweden, its access to the road and rail arteries of Scandinavia is virtually instant.
Helsingborg is one of the busiest and best equipped ports in Scandinavia, handling both passenger and cargo traffic in a wide variety of forms. In recent times the Port has added cruise calls to its wide portfolio of activities.
Being the natural link between Sweden and Denmark and the Continent, some 12-14 million passengers and more than two million cars, trucks and railway cars pass through the Port annually.
Cargo volumes exceeded 10 million t in 1994, which was a new record. Passenger traffic increased to more than 12 million people, confirming Helsingborg's status as one of the busiest passenger ports in the world.
The Port includes the ferry harbour North Harbour, the container terminal West Harbour, the multi-purpose Scania Terminal, the Oil Terminal, the Grain Terminal, the Train-ferry terminal and the Bulk terminal.
Over the past few years the Port has been working on a development programme and stepped up its marketing efforts on a broad front. These efforts have proved highly successful and the Port now anticipates several years of stability in terms of cargo volumes and income.
In order to meet what is expected to be a big increase in transport volumes during the early years of the next century, there has been heavy investment over the past 10 years in port equipment and facilities. As a result, the Port of Helsingborg is now one of the most modern ports in Scandinavia.
