The Stena sphere is a conglomerate with three parent companies, Stena AB, Sessanlinjen AB and Stena Metall AB, wholly owned by the Olsson family, operating in ferry lines, shipping, offshore drilling, trading/recycling of steel, metals and paper, properties and finance. Stena is also the largest single shareholder in the French company Coflexip Stena Offshore, quoted on NASDAQ in New York and on the Paris stock exchange.
The shipping and drilling activities are conducted in specialised companies operating worldwide and being among the leaders in their specific fields, like Stena RoRo and the tanker company Stena Bulk in close co-operation with Concordia Maritime, listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange since 1984.
The high standard of the Technical Department is well known all over the world, always in the forefront developing safer and more efficient ship types and techniques for various fields of the sphere.

The sphere's own ship management company in Glasgow has been able to attract several outside clients through consistent quality and safety work.
The property company, Stena Fastigheter, owns properties in Sweden, Holland, Luxembourg and Germany.
The ferry lines, under the name of Stena Line, started in 1962 and carry more than 14 million passengers. With a fleet of 30 ships operating on 22 ferry routes in Europe, Stena Line is the largest ferry company in the world. Stena Line also owns ports in Harwich, Fishguard, Holyhead and Stranraer in the United Kingdom and operates three hotels integrated with the ferries' travel business. Stena Line AB has been listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange since 1988.
The Stena Metall group of companies (founded in 1939) process more than 40% of the Swedish recycling market in steel and metal and 20% of all Swedish and 30% of all Danish waste paper. Stena Metall Trading trades more than 1.5 million tons of steel and metal. Stena Metall Environment has a unique method in the handling of photographic chemical waste.
