Telia

Telia is the leading telecommunications company in Sweden, one of the world's most liberalized and competitive telecom markets. The company has also established business operations throughout the Nordic/Baltic region and, together with local partners, around the world.

IT country
Sweden's "information super-highways" are already in place, and Telia offers a world of sophisticated services for the internationalized business community as well as the remote wilderness of the north. For example, the city of Helsingborg in southern Sweden was among the first in Europe to provide greatly improved community services through high-resolution images, video-on-demand and interactive multimedia techniques. And the call centres of banks, insurance companies, airlines, shipping companies, international courier services and car rental companies are often located in remote low-cost areas.

Track record
In 1995, Gothenburg hosted the World Athletics Championships. Telia, official telecom supplier to the championships, provided the massive ISDN capacity required for simultaneous distribution of commentaries and pictures to news media and image banks around the world. To meet the expected invasion of visitors, Telia even increased the capacity of its mobile services in central Gothenburg by 400% from an already high level. After all, Sweden has more mobile-telephone users than any other country, worldwide.

Different school, different future
Telia internet@school introduces teachers and students to a whole new universe of information, and inspires new learning methods. At a higher-educational level, Telia co-operates with academic project groups around the country.
Utilizing Telia's school data network, researchers from the Ottenby bird watching station and media students from the nearby college in Kalmar are building a multimedia database. The database contains structured descriptions of birds and the work conducted at the station with text, full colour images and, soon, sound. At the University of Lund, the new DECT* (*Digital European Cordless Telecommunications) system permits students and lecturers to work effectively, wherever they are. In the library, in the lab or even off-campus - the world of information is always there.

Sophisticated business solutions
This northern country has a disproportionally high concentration of successful multinational companies, often located far from the major population centres, yet still requiring state-of-the-art global communications.

Bilspedition - a leading Swedish transport company - combines EDI** (** Electronic Data Interchange) and the GPS satellite navigation system to monitor truck movements for cost-effective "just-in-time" deliveries. And Henjo Plåtteknik, a small sub-contractor to the Swedish export industry, regularly receives customer CAD drawings via ISDN which are fed directly into the laser cutting machines. Besides saving money and time-to-market, customers report significantly reduced wastage.

Serving customers in a hundred countries
Beyond its natural Nordic/Baltic home market, Telia is actively engaged in a wide range of telecom business activities. In the UK, for example, Telia was one of the first non-British telecommunications companies licensed to provide public voice services. The company is participating in about twenty fixed and mobile telephone ventures around the world.

Telia customers also enjoy outstanding international connections and pan-European personal communications solutions via Unisource, a joint venture between Telia, PTT Telecom Netherlands, Swiss Telecom PTT and TelefÛnica of Spain. The Unisource portfolio includes a broad range of corporate and personal services focusing on Europe's international business community. Global Uniworld corporate business services, integrating data, voice, messaging and satellite services, are jointly provided by Unisource and AT&T.
